Ichiro Sumikura

Director-General for Environmental Policy, Ministry of the Environment

Graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo and completed the doctoral program at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), earning a Ph.D. in Government. He joined the Environment Agency of Japan in 1991. Following its reorganization into the Ministry of the Environment in 2001, he held various senior positions, including Director of the Accounting Division, Director of the Personnel Division, Counsellor for Climate Change Policy at the Cabinet Secretariat, Director-General for Policy Coordination, and Director-General of the Environmental Regeneration and Resource Circulation Bureau. He assumed his current position in August 2026.
